Sea Colony East Buildings Experienced an Electrical Outage on Thursday, 6/24/10
June 25, 2010
Sea Colony East experienced loss of electrical power yesterday afternoon. While reporters were onsite and filed stories, the specific information about the situation follows:
As a result of a main power line outage in South Bethany, the beach side of Sea Colony experienced electrical outages at about 3:45 p.m. on Thursday, June 24. While Delmarva Power has not yet revealed the reason for the power line problem, when the line failed it caused a surge which overheated the transformers on the ground floor at Farragut and Harbour and the first floor of Island, and all power was lost on the east side of Sea Colony for about 90 minutes.
Farragut, Harbour and Island buildings were evacuated with the assistance of building maintenance staff, Rec. maintenance staff, and Security staff. Fire Departments from three companies - Bethany Beach, Millville and Roxana were dispatched. Delmarva Power also was called and onsite after the Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company arrived. In addition to the fire companies, fire police, paramedics and ambulances arrived because Sea Colony is a condo complex with buildings over four stories, and because three separate buildings experienced transformer issues, including smoke showing in the transformer rooms of Farragaut, Harbour and Island.
At about 5:15 p.m., Delmarva Power switched Sea Colony's main power line to an alternate source and power was restored to the buildings, after which Delmarva Power certified the buildings were safe for re-entry. By 7:05 p.m., power was switched back to the South Bethany trunk line and all buildings were secured, enabling maintenance staff to resume their normal schedules at 8 p.m.
